Old Tobacco Ads

These old tobacco ads sure take me back – way back.  I remember selling Prince Albert “tin or loose” tobacco at our general store in DeGrau.  Sickle “Stick or Plug” tobacco was also very popular with the older pipe-smoking set.  When I was in my early teens I thought it was great being able to buy a couple of “loose” cigarettes because most of our crowd (aged between 12 and 14 yrs old at the time) could not afford to buy a full package and only a few knew how to roll their own.  Yep, those were the days.

Diamond Jubilee

Like many Canadians I had not been born 60 years ago when  Queen Elizabeth II took the throne to rule over the British Commonwealth of nations.  One day earlier, 5 Feb, her father, George VI, had died, she was just 25 years old at the time.  Today the  Commonwealth, or what’s left of it, celebrates her  60-year reign.  Now 85 years old, she is the longest-serving monarch, after Queen Victoria who reigned for more than 63 years.  How time flies when you are having fun.
