Like most Canadians, having watched last night’s IIHF final, I awoke this morning still in a state of shock. How could the Canadian team lose the game with a 3-0 lead after two periods of play? Virtually impossible in my book, but nevertheless it did happen. Maybe the Canadians were too cocky going into the third period, maybe they were tired, maybe the coaches made some wrong decisions – who knows? What is certain is that they were outplayed in the third period by the Russians when it really counted. As much as I wanted Canada to win, hats off to the Russians for hanging in there and dominating the play in the last 20 minutes – 5 goals to ZERO in the last period – simply amazing. On the bright side, it is a good thing for the IIHF to have a Non-North American team win the Championship, hopefully this win will stimulate more interest in junior hockey in Europe. Well Done Russia. MPC
