As NATO, including Canada and the US, begin to wind down their involvement in the failed mission in Afghanistan, we should take this opportunity to look back at what exactly we accomplished during the past 10 years:
- Increased Corruption: since 2001 Afghanistan moved up one spot from the third most corrupt country in the world to the second place – right after Kenya – it is estimated that over half of the money Canada spent on Afghanistan during the past 10 years ended up in the hands of corrupt officials.
- Increased Heroin Production – Afghanistan is still the world’s number one exporter of heroin – 90 percent of the world’s total supply – thanks to the money we invested in its agricultural sector the production of heroin has more than doubled over the past 10 years.
- Better Trained/Equipped Taliban – it is estimated that about 60 percent of the young Muslims trained by NATO have returned to their roots (the taliban) taking with them NATO training, NATO equipment and a fundamental knowledge of NATO military tactics.
- Decreased Security – currently, with NATO and Canadian forces still in place, there is virtually NO security in the country. According to Afghan security studies: “the government is incapable of performing the most basic security function – as troops pull out of the country the situation will worsen – and the void will be filled by the taliban.”
- Women’s Rights – the female sector of the population have lost even more of their rights during the past 10 years – if that’s possible. According to a recent study “Afghanistan tops the list, as it is in general one of the world’s most dangerous places for women. Congo, Pakistan, India and Somalia rounded out the top five.”
In Summary, our 10-year involvement in that arm-pit of a country accomplished exactly dick-all. However, to deploy our military in support of a corrupt government, it did cost 156 Brave Young lives and over 21 Billion dollars.
