Yes these young ladies certainly are golden – the Huron Lakers took Gold in the 2010 Ontario Cup Provincial Championships – U11 Atom Girls. The competition was held over three days this weekend in Orillia, Ontario. The Huron Lakers faced a formidable challenge in that they are from a relatively small center (Sarnia) and were up against teams from the Greater Toronto Area with a much larger player base. Nevertheless, this determined team of young players were able to do what they do best – play great basketball. After going undefeated throughout the round-robin rounds they were matched against a higher ranked team for the Gold Match. The game was close throughout with both teams playing their best resulting in the lead changing numerous times. Finally in overtime – the Huron Lakers came through with the winning basket – taking Gold. The Lakers’ overall attitude throughout the competition was summed up by my goddaughter when I asked how she was feeling before the big game; ”Uncle Pat” she said “our team is having a lot of fun.” Well done to the Ontario Champions, their coaches and families for a fantastic end to a great season.
